In high school, I was part of the Cross Country Running club.
I don’t know why.
I’m NOT an athlete. I have never been an athlete. I will never be an athlete.
Just so we’re clear… hahaha.
But… I think I joined just because my friend did.
AND… I SUCKED. I mean, I really sucked. I’m not being hard on myself. I was BAD. I’ve never been a runner and it showed.
I was the kinda bad that my team members finished the race and then came back to run with me to the end.
I was the kinda bad that I ran the only person I ran faster than was the girl who hurt her ankle during the race.
I knew I was bad… but you know what? I kept trying.
I kept trying because I didn’t believe in quitting.
I kept trying because I had committed to doing it.
I kept trying because I wanted to get BETTER, at least.
You’ve gotta understand… running felt like the hardest thing in the world to me. Like I was gonna die mid-run. And so my “winning” in this case was actually just completing a big run. Did I become a gold-medal runner? Nope. But I did not quit. I knew that if I’d quit I’d have felt so much regret over the thing that I couldn’t do in high school. Now it’s just a thing I did that wasn’t for me, and I’m totally OK with that.
I’m getting emails from people lately about how they’re not making any money while trying to build a business online, how it’s hard, how they’ve got so many things going on but nothing’s working.
I get it. And I wish I could tell you that every single one of you are going to be million dollar business owners. But we all know that’s not true. But one thing I know to be true is that if you are determined, if you decide you will not quit and if you are adamant about finding a way… you’ll finish.
You’ll finish your website setup.
You’ll finish your product.
You’ll finish a marketing campaign.
You’ll finish a webinar JV.
You’ll finish sending that email to your list.
etc, etc, etc
And bit by bit those things will add up, and over time you’ll have a business. How big that business is and how well it serves you I cannot say, it’s up to you. But what you are in complete control of right now is if you quit or not.
When I was waiting to go on my races in high school I’d read this plastic card I kept in my pocket with a poem on it. The poem was called don’t quit and I really think it set me on the path to be the person I am today. I took that poem to heart and I remember it to this day. I memorized it. I want to share it with you if you’re feeling discouraged in your business today or ever. Read it and read it again like I did… and then go take action.
Don’t You Quit
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow –
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It might be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.
